About Army Museum North Queensland

Jezzine Barracks is an integral part of North Queensland’s military history, serving as home to Australian military units for over 120 years. Today, it stands proudly as the perfect location to showcase the Museum and its impressive Collection of the Army’s history in the region. It all began on October 30, 1886, when the 3rd Queensland Regiment was established and stationed at Kissing Point, Townsville, with Major William Slade Vincent as its first commanding officer. Over the years, the North Queensland Military Museum committee of management requested that the Fort at Kissing Point be allowed to open as a Military Museum, which it did for many years before it was closed for further restoration in August of 2008. Since then, the Army Museum of North Queensland has taken up residence there, preserving the region’s rich military history for future generations to admire and appreciate.

The Australian Army has a rich and storied history, and it’s thanks to the hard work of the Australian Army History Unit this history is being preserved and shared. The Unit is responsible for developing all sorts of programs and policies related to the collection, conservation, interpretation and promotion of the Australian Army’s history. But it doesn’t stop there! The Australian Army Museum Network is also doing a fantastic job of preserving and sharing the nation’s military history. Tracing the country’s involvement in war and peacekeeping efforts from Colonial times to the present day, visitors to these museums are in for a treat. The network is a fascinating and diverse collection of museums located all across the country, offering a glimpse into Australia’s military past that’s not to be missed.
