The Perc Tucker Regional Gallery is a must-visit location for any art enthusiast. Named after Alderman Perc Tucker, Mayor of Townsville from 1976 to 1980, the gallery has a rich history that began when it was officially opened by the Mayor of Townsville, Alderman M F Reynolds, on 25 September 1981. In addition to its extensive art collection, the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery also boasts a historically significant building. Built-in 1885 by the colonial architect F D G Stanley, the building served as the northern headquarters for the Union Bank of Australia.

The history of the building that houses the public gallery in Townsville, Queensland, is as fascinating as the artwork that adorns its walls. Built-in the early 1900s, the upper level of the building was added in the 1930s and served the people of North Queensland for almost a century as a bank. Over the years, it changed hands several times as different banks merged until it became the regional office of the ANZ Banking Group. In 1980, the City Council acquired and developed the building into a public gallery at a cost of $650,000, with a third of the cost contributed by the Government. Today, the gallery continues to function as a cultural hub for the community, with its operating costs funded by the Townsville City Council. It is a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving its rich history and supporting the arts.
